What is Hypnotherapy and Coaching?
First and foremost, hypnotherapy isn't what you may have seen on the television. Stage hypnosis is so very far removed from hypnotherapy it can be considered entirely different, and I won't be making you cluck like a chicken or swinging a watch in front of your face.
Let me give you a brief explanation of how our minds work, and hopefully this will provide a clearer understanding of what I do.
Our conscious mind is when we are awake, alert and aware of what is going on, what we are doing and what is happening in the here and now. Our subconscious mind however is where we hold and store all of our learnings, experiences and memories. It’s like our own personal hard drive except that it's prime aim is to look after our safety.
The fascinating thing about our subconscious is that it takes up ten-elevenths of our total mind and it stores all of the information it has ever been given. It works in black and white, there are no grey areas and it cannot deal with negatives. A useful thing to remember is that we can change the information that our subconscious stores as long as it's for our personal benefit.
Driving is a very useful analogy to help us understand how our subconscious mind works. We often get home from driving somewhere not really remembering the journey having seemingly slipped into some kind of auto pilot. In this instance driving has become a learnt behaviour; it's become a habit and this is where our subconscious has taken over. We were not consciously aware of driving or the journey.
Hypnotherapy is actually a very gentle and nurturing therapy. Firstly, I'll ask you some questions about your issue and get an understanding of you, your goal and your challenges. Once I feel I have a good understanding I will start the hypnotherapy session. Sitting comfortably in a chair, you can close your eyes and relax, and I'll guide you into a deep state of relaxation. When you're completely relaxed, I can then make positive suggestions to your subconscious.
These suggestions have been taken from your initial consultation and are your wants and desires, because your subconscious will not accept anything from me that it doesn’t want to hear. There are different techniques we can use when you are in hypnosis, suggestion work, visualisation of positive situations, re-framing, aversion, regression, hypno-analysis and more. All techniques will be explained and discussed with you before being used. In most sessions all you need to do is sit back and relax, your sub-conscious and I will do all the work. When I've delivered your personal screed, I will re-orientate you into the here and now.
Coaching is me asking you specific questions to help you come up with the answers to improve an area of your life. Using the GROW model, we'll explore your goals, reality, options and the way forward.
Coaching compliments hypnotherapy very well. Once we've clarified all of the GROW model information, I can then write and deliver for you a personal and specific screed whilst you are in hypnosis. Not only is your mind in the right place but you will have realistic and workable actions that you can go away with to ensure absolute success.
Coaching and hypnotherapy can be used as two separate tools if that is your preference.
