Let’s face it, the majority of us set up a business because we have a cracking idea, a passion to support others or a burning desire to change the world. The love for doing something we want to do takes over and off we go… Can you remember how you felt when you first set up your business? Huge excitement and mass of nerves all muddled up together?

What we didn’t expect was what a bumpy ride would be ahead of us. Every time you get a knock, a disappointed customer, a demanding client, insufficient income, an inability to pay the bills our self-belief, our mindset gets a massive chip taken out of it. Before we know it and if we’re not careful we are scouring the job pages looking for a way out.

My journey was really similar to this. Now I’m determined now to support my fellow business owners to be able to skim over any bumps in the road and finally achieve the success you deserve with some simple strategies for self-belief.

Strategies for Self-Belief

If your self-belief, your confidence, has taken too many knocks, here are some helpful tips that helped me and my clients to stay strong and achieve success.

  • Limiting beliefs holding you back? – They sound a bit like this – “I’m not good enough”, I’m too chaotic for this”, I’m not worthy”, on and on and on. Draining and never ending. Have a go at identifying where or who originally gave you those beliefs. Write down all your beliefs and think back to where you first heard this message, write by the side the name of the person. Give thanks to that person and then hand them back – “ I no longer take these beliefs with me”.
  • Don’t know how to increase your belief? – close your eyes and think about what being a self-believer would look and feel like, what would you be doing, saying, wearing? When the vision is clear notice what you did to get there. Ask yourself, what one change can you make today that would get you one step closer? Work on you, not just your business.
  • Fear of sounding cocky – this may sound like a strange one, but this always comes up for my clients. People often say, “but I don’t want to come across as cocky”. Remember that this is your version of self-belief and I’m sure being cocky or overconfident will not be any part of it.
  • Fear of what others will think – This one links closely to the one above. Have a think about how you want to be. I’m sure there is nothing offensive or upsetting about your vision. If people don’t like what they see or if other people think you are showing off, then it’s usually down to jealousy. Just like when we were kids, anybody who does something different or puts their head above the norm would get teased. These people are not your people, they are not your ideal client and if you lose them then surely that’s a good thing.

Self-belief is driven by having a clear vision and acceptance of who you are and what you want. It’s about having a plan in place that works for you and what you believe in. It’s about being your true authentic self, being aligned to your values. When you have all this in place your self-belief remains strong and you live life everyday with conviction and intention. Knock backs don’t dent you as you just know you are doing the right things for you and your business.
